Here's the deal: this movie has a 22% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 29 on Metacritic. Those aren't typos. Critics called it "aggressively mediocre" and "a missed opportunity," and audiences barely liked it more.
It's based on a genuinely fun video game franchise, but the film strips away everything that made those games charming and replaces it with the most generic animated action-comedy template imaginable. The humor falls flat, the characters are one-dimensional, and the story feels like it was assembled from a kit labeled "Standard Kids Movie Parts."
Is it safe? Absolutely. Will it traumatize your kid? No. Will it enrich them in any way? Also no. This is the cinematic equivalent of empty calories—your 7-year-old might sit through it once, but they won't ask to watch it again, and you'll both forget it existed by next week.
If your kid is begging for screen time and you've exhausted better options, fine. But there are dozens of animated films from the past decade that are safer bets for both entertainment and actual quality. This one's a hard pass unless you're truly desperate.
