Rango is that rare animated film that's genuinely artistic and weird—it won an Oscar and critics loved it, but it's also kind of a tough watch for the typical family movie night. The animation is spectacular, the themes about identity and heroism are legitimately interesting, and it's got a quirky sense of humor that sets it apart from the Pixar/Illumination crowd.
But here's the thing: it's also slow, tonally dark, and has some genuinely scary moments that will freak out younger or sensitive kids. The 18-point gap between critic and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes tells you everything—this is more 'film appreciation' than 'fun family romp.' If your kid is into Westerns, can handle some intense action, and doesn't need constant jokes to stay engaged, this could be a cool pick. If they're used to the zippy pacing of modern animated films, they might tap out halfway through.
It's a solid choice for the right kid at the right age, but it's not the crowd-pleaser its marketing suggested back in 2011.
