Raising Dion is that rare superhero show that actually cares about character development and family dynamics as much as powers. The representation is genuinely good—not tokenizing, just a Black family living their complicated life with the added twist of superpowers.
The elephant in the room: dad's dead, and that's not a spoiler, it's the premise. If your kid is working through loss or is particularly sensitive to abandonment themes, tread carefully. But if they can handle it, the show actually models healthy grief processing.
The superhero action is there but not gratuitous—think more 'tween-appropriate Marvel' than dark and gritty. The real draw is the mystery and watching Dion figure out his identity. Solid family viewing for the right age range, though be warned it got cancelled after season 2, so you're left hanging a bit.
Not groundbreaking television, but genuinely good representation and better than 80% of the superhero content flooding streaming services. Worth a watch if your kid is in that sweet spot of wanting to be a superhero but also needing stories with actual heart.
