This is what happens when an animated sequel actually tries—and succeeds spectacularly. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is legitimately one of the best animated films of the 2020s, with stunning visuals, real emotional depth, and themes that'll stick with kids (and you) long after the credits roll.
The Death character is no joke. He's a genuinely frightening antagonist who represents Puss's fear of mortality, and the movie doesn't shy away from that intensity. Younger kids or those sensitive to scary content might find him too much. But for kids ready for it, this is rich territory—the film handles anxiety, panic attacks, and existential dread with remarkable nuance.
It's funny without being annoying, adventurous without being mindless, and emotional without being manipulative. The panic attack scene alone is worth discussing with your kids. This is the rare family film that respects its audience enough to go deep while still delivering spectacular entertainment.
Just maybe preview it before showing it to your particularly sensitive six-year-old. That wolf is intense.
