Planet Zoo is that rare sim that's both genuinely educational and genuinely fun. It doesn't dumb down animal science—kids learn about enrichment, social dynamics, biome requirements, and conservation in meaningful ways—but wraps it in satisfying zoo-building gameplay.
The creative tools are exceptional. Kids can spend hours perfecting habitats, watching their animals interact, and designing elaborate park layouts. The animals themselves are beautifully rendered and behave realistically, which makes the whole experience feel more like a nature documentary you're directing than a typical game.
The learning curve is real, though. This isn't a pick-up-and-play title. Younger kids or those new to management sims will need patience (or a helpful adult) to get past the initial complexity. But once it clicks, it's deeply rewarding. The fact that animals can die from neglect is sobering but teaches real consequences—though sensitive kids should know this going in.
No monetization nonsense is a huge win. You buy the game, you get the game. DLC adds more animals but isn't pushed on you. It's refreshingly complete in an era of endless microtransactions.
If your kid loves animals and has the patience for complex games, this is an absolute gem.
