This is the textbook example of a sequel that mistakes 'bigger and darker' for 'better.' The first Pirates movie worked because it balanced swashbuckling fun with genuine heart. Dead Man's Chest cranks up the spectacle but loses the charm.
The creature design is legitimately impressive—Davy Jones and his crew are nightmare fuel in the best way if you're old enough to appreciate it. But for kids who loved the lighter adventure of the first film, this one might be genuinely upsetting. The body horror, the Kraken attacks, the general sense of dread—it's a significant tonal shift.
And it's just too long. At two and a half hours with a convoluted plot that doesn't resolve, it feels like homework. Critics were split (53% on Rotten Tomatoes) for good reason. If your teen loved the first one and wants more, fine. But don't assume this is family movie night material just because it's Disney.
