This is what picture books should be—energetic, culturally specific, and absolutely gorgeous to look at. Morales captures the way kids actually play, where you're simultaneously a champion wrestler and someone who needs a snack break.
The lucha libre framing is brilliant because it takes something kids already do (wrestle with siblings, battle imaginary foes) and elevates it to championship status. The Spanish vocabulary and Mexican folklore references feel organic rather than shoe-horned in for educational value.
At 4.8 stars on Amazon and a Pura Belpré Award, this isn't a hidden gem—it's a well-deserved favorite. The only minor knock is that the high energy might not work for every reading moment, but that's also its strength. This is a book that makes kids want to get up and MOVE.
