Nimona is that rare animated film that's both wildly entertaining and genuinely meaningful—no small feat. It's got the action and humor to keep kids engaged, but underneath is a story about what happens when society decides someone is a monster before giving them a chance.
The LGBTQ+ representation is refreshingly matter-of-fact (Ballister and Ambrosius are just... a couple, no big deal), and Nimona herself is a fantastic character for any kid who's ever felt like they don't quite fit the mold. The animation style is gorgeous and comic-inspired, giving it a visual energy that feels modern and dynamic.
That said, this isn't Daniel Tiger. There's real action violence, intense sequences, and themes about systemic prejudice that younger kids might not fully grasp. The climax gets genuinely heavy. But for families ready to have those conversations, this is a gem that entertains while giving you plenty to talk about afterward.
It's Netflix's biggest middle finger to Disney's formula, and honestly? It works.
