NBA Jam is a competent mobile port of an arcade legend, and if you grew up in the '90s, hearing 'HE'S ON FIRE!' will hit you right in the nostalgia cortex. For kids today? It's fine. The gameplay is simple, the dunks are ridiculous, and local multiplayer means you can hand your kid the iPad without worrying about online weirdos.
But let's be real: this is a 1993 game ported to 2011 mobile, and it shows. The depth isn't there, the graphics are dated even by 2011 standards, and EA's monetization model (pay to unlock stuff faster!) feels gross. It's fun for 15-minute sessions when you're waiting for soccer practice to end, but it's not going to hold attention like modern mobile games.
The cartoonish violence (players shoving each other to the ground) is harmless, and the ESRB agrees (rated E). The bigger question is whether your kid actually cares about basketball enough to get past the dated presentation. If they're already into the NBA, this could be a fun way to learn about legends like Dr. J. If not, they'll probably be bored in 20 minutes.
