Napoleon Dynamite is a Marmite movie—you either get its weird, deadpan vibe or you're sitting there wondering why everyone's talking so slowly and nothing's happening.
It's got a good heart buried under all the awkwardness: Napoleon helps his friend, stands up to bullies (sort of), and ultimately finds small victories. But the journey there is UNCOMFORTABLE. This kid gets mocked relentlessly, his family situation is bleak, and the humor is so dry it's basically desiccated.
For the right kid—someone who appreciates offbeat humor and doesn't mind cringe—this can be a genuine delight and a lesson in embracing your weird. For everyone else, it's 96 minutes of 'why are we watching this?'
The 20-year age gap doesn't help. What felt fresh and indie in 2004 now feels like a very specific time capsule. Modern kids raised on faster-paced humor may genuinely not understand what's supposed to be funny.
Bottom line: If your middle schooler is already a bit of an oddball who likes quirky stuff, give it a shot. If they prefer Marvel movies and TikTok comedy, this will bore them to tears.
