My First Stone Age does exactly what it promises: introduces young kids to euro-game mechanics without the complexity that makes their eyes glaze over. The memory element is clever—it's not just 'roll and move' baby stuff, there's actual strategic thinking happening.
The 15-minute runtime is clutch. Long enough to feel like a real game, short enough that you're not trapped in toddler board game hell for 45 minutes. Parents report kids genuinely asking to play it again, which is the ultimate test.
It's not going to blow your mind if you're a serious board gamer, but that's not the point. This is training wheels for Catan, a gateway drug to Ticket to Ride. And unlike a lot of kids' games that make adults want to fake a work emergency, this one is actually pleasant to play. The prehistoric theme is charming without being educational-in-a-bad-way, and the components are solid.
If you've got a 4-6 year old who's ready to graduate from Candy Land but isn't quite ready for the big kid games, this is a no-brainer. Just be prepared for them to absolutely crush you once they memorize all the token positions.
