This is a solid, imaginative middle-grade graphic novel that doesn't pull punches on the danger front. Hatke's art is gorgeous and weird, the story moves, and the sibling relationship at its core feels real.
The violence is more intense than you might expect—Common Sense Media isn't kidding about the blood and attacks—so this isn't for the faint of heart or younger elementary readers. But for kids who can handle it, it's a satisfying fantasy adventure with genuine stakes and creative world-building.
It's best read as Book 2, but you won't be totally lost if you skip ahead. The goblin king twist is fun, the pacing is tight, and it wraps up the series without overstaying its welcome. A strong pick for graphic novel fans ready for something with a bit more bite.
