Mamma Mia is pure feel-good escapism wrapped in sequins and ABBA—it's not trying to be high art, and that's okay. The story celebrates an unconventional family finding their way, with Meryl Streep absolutely committing to the bit as a free-spirited single mom with a complicated past.
The 'which of these three men is my dad?' premise is handled with surprising sweetness, though it does require parents to be ready for conversations about casual relationships and how babies are made. It's all very PG-13 and played for laughs, but younger kids will definitely ask questions.
Honestly, this movie's staying power comes down to whether your kid enjoys musicals and can vibe with early-2000s cheese. The plot is thin, the singing is... variable (looking at you, Pierce), and it's not exactly enriching cinema. But it's joyful, the female relationships are genuinely lovely, and sometimes you just need to watch people dance on a dock in Greece.
It's dated enough that some modern kids might bounce off it, but musical theater kids and ABBA fans will eat it up. Just maybe preview it yourself first if you're considering it for under-10s.
