Madagascar is a perfectly serviceable mid-2000s animated comedy that does its job: keeps kids entertained for 86 minutes with colorful visuals and energetic humor. The friendship themes are solid if predictable, and there's nothing here that'll make you regret hitting play.
That said, it's aged like milk. The pop culture references, the frenetic DreamWorks humor style, the celebrity voice casting as a selling point—it all screams 2005. Critics were lukewarm even at release (55% on Rotten Tomatoes), and twenty years later it feels even more like a product of its time.
If your kid discovers it and loves it, great—it's harmless fun with decent messages about friendship. But if you're choosing between this and more recent animated films, you're probably better off with something that's held up better. It's not bad, it's just... fine. And fine doesn't really cut it when there are so many genuinely great options out there.
