This is what a third installment should be: it doesn't just rehash the first two movies but actually deepens Po's character arc in meaningful ways. The identity themes are surprisingly nuanced for an animated film—Po learning he doesn't have to choose between his panda heritage and kung fu master identity, that he can be both, feels genuinely important for kids navigating their own multiple identities.
The animation is stunning (that spirit realm!), the voice cast is excellent (J.K. Simmons as the villain is chef's kiss), and it manages to be funny without being obnoxious. Yes, it follows the DreamWorks formula, and yes, you can predict the beats, but it executes them well.
It's not groundbreaking cinema, but it's solidly entertaining family viewing that won't make you want to leave the room. The 87% critic score and 7.1 IMDb rating reflect what it is: a well-crafted animated sequel that respects its audience. Your kids will laugh, you won't be bored, and everyone might actually talk about the themes afterward. That's a win.
