The 'Pokémon GO' Alternative
By 2026, the 'catch-em-all' AR genre has seen a lot of casualties, but Jurassic World Alive has survived because it leans into the one thing kids never get tired of: giant lizards. Unlike Pokémon GO, which focuses on collection and community, Alive is much more focused on the 'Lab' and 'Battle' aspects.
The Hybrid Hook
The genius of the game—and the thing that will keep your kid obsessed—is the hybrid system. You aren't just collecting a T-Rex; you're collecting T-Rex DNA so you can fuse it with a Velociraptor to create the Indominous Rex. This creates a much more compelling 'just one more' loop than most AR games. It encourages kids to look at the map not just for what's rare, but for what they need to complete a recipe.
The Cost of Doing Business
Ludia (and now Jam City) knows exactly how to squeeze a player base. The game features a 'VIP' subscription that increases your drone's battery life and gives you better rewards. For a kid, this feels like a massive disadvantage if they don't have it. If you're going to let your kid dive deep into this, you need to have the 'we are not spending real money on digital dinosaur juice' talk early and often.
Compared to other AR games, the 'dart-shooting' mechanic (how you collect DNA) requires a bit more dexterity and focus, which is fun, but also means kids are even more distracted by their screens while walking. Keep them on a leash—metaphorically, or maybe literally if they see a Blue on the other side of a busy intersection.
