Look, Insurgent is the textbook definition of 'fine.' It's not offensive, it's not terrible, but it's also not particularly good or memorable.
This is peak mid-2010s YA dystopia, riding the coattails of Hunger Games but without the sharp social commentary or compelling characters. The action is competent, Shailene Woodley does her best with a script that's more interested in plot mechanics than emotional truth, and the whole thing just sort of... happens.
The bigger issue is that it's surprisingly heavy for what it is. Tris dealing with PTSD and survivor's guilt could be powerful, but instead it's just depressing without being meaningfully explored. The suicide contemplation scene is brief but real, and younger teens might not be ready for that.
If your teen loved the first Divergent movie and wants to see what happens next, sure, this won't hurt them. But there are so many better options for action, sci-fi, or coming-of-age stories. This is basically homework for completionists, not appointment viewing.
The franchise died after the third movie (the fourth was never even made), which tells you everything you need to know about how this resonated with audiences. It's already dated, and it's only been 10 years.
