Look, this movie was peak early-2000s rom-com when it came out—Kate Hudson in that yellow dress became iconic, McConaughey was in his shirtless prime, and the premise sounded fun. But here's the truth: it hasn't aged well.
The entire plot is built on two attractive people lying to each other for professional gain, which is... not great relationship modeling. The gender stereotypes are LOUD (crazy clingy girlfriend! emotionally unavailable man!), and the humor feels stuck in 2003. Critics gave it 42% for good reason—it's predictable, formulaic, and the 'lesson' about honesty arrives after 100 minutes of celebrating deception.
For modern viewers, especially kids and teens, this is a tough sell. It's too dated to feel fresh, too adult for younger viewers, and too shallow to offer real value. If you're a parent who loved this in college and want to rewatch it? Go for it. But don't expect your teens to care, and definitely don't show it to your 13-year-old as a model for anything except what NOT to do in relationships.
There are better rom-coms that have aged more gracefully. This one belongs in the 'remember when?' category, not the 'must-watch' pile.
