Look, HIMYM was a cultural phenomenon in the late 2000s, and if you watched it in college, you probably have fond memories. But here's the truth: it has not aged well.
The show's treatment of women—particularly through Barney's character—is genuinely uncomfortable to watch now. What was played as charming roguishness in 2005 now looks like textbook manipulation and misogyny. Ted's 'romantic' pursuits often cross into stalking territory. The finale is so universally reviled that it taints the entire series.
That said, the craft is there. The storytelling structure is clever, the callbacks are fun, and when it focuses on friendship rather than conquest, it has genuine heart. But as a recommendation for family viewing or teen entertainment in 2025? Hard pass. There are dozens of better sitcoms that deliver laughs without the gross gender politics.
If you're an adult looking for comfort-food nostalgia TV, go for it—but keep it away from your teens unless you want to have some very awkward conversations about consent and respect.
