Look, the heart is in the right place. Protecting endangered owls? Great! Kids becoming activists? Love it! But this 2006 adaptation takes a charming book and turns it into a slog.
With a 26% on Rotten Tomatoes and a dismal 2.6/5 on Letterboxd, critics and audiences agree: this is textbook "good message, bad movie." The acting is stiff, the pacing drags, and the environmental message gets beaten into your skull with all the subtlety of a construction bulldozer.
If your kid is obsessed with owls or already deep into environmental activism, maybe give it a shot. But honestly? Just read them the Carl Hiaasen book instead. It's actually good, and you won't have to suffer through 90 minutes of well-intentioned mediocrity. There are so many better ways to teach kids about conservation - this ain't it.
