Look, He Got Game has something to say about college sports corruption and the exploitation of young Black athletes. That's real, and it matters. Denzel Washington is good, and Spike Lee brings his signature style.
But this movie is a mess for family viewing. The graphic sexual content isn't just present—it's pervasive and gratuitous. Parent after parent on Common Sense Media warns about 'unexpected' sex scenes and the film's treatment of women as objects. When your movie about father-son redemption is derailed by prostitution scenes and misogyny, you've lost the plot.
The 1998 pacing doesn't help either. This feels dated in ways that make it hard to sit through, even for adults interested in the subject matter. There are better films about sports exploitation (Hoop Dreams) and better father-son dramas that don't require you to sit through scenes that make everyone uncomfortable.
If you're an adult interested in sports sociology and can stomach the problematic content, maybe. But honestly? Skip this one. The juice isn't worth the squeeze.
