Gran Turismo is a solid, crowd-pleasing sports biopic that does exactly what it sets out to do: inspire gamers and racing fans with a legitimately wild true story. The execution is paint-by-numbers sports movie (which is why critics shrugged), but audiences ate it up because the core story is genuinely compelling.
For families, this is a pretty safe bet if your kids are 11+ and can handle intense racing action. The crashes are realistic and one sequence depicting a fatal accident is handled with gravity—it's not gratuitous, but it's real. That said, it's nowhere near as violent or dark as many superhero movies kids this age watch routinely.
The enrichment value is real: this movie validates gaming as skill-building, shows the unglamorous work behind success, and celebrates mentorship and perseverance. Is it going to change cinema? No. Will your kid enjoy it and maybe feel inspired? Probably, especially if they're into cars or competitive gaming.
The biggest knock is that it's long (135 minutes) and follows every sports movie beat you've seen before. But sometimes formula works, and the 98% audience score suggests this one does.
