Look, this isn't going to win any Oscars, but it's a perfectly serviceable family movie that does exactly what it sets out to do: bring Goosebumps nostalgia to the big screen with enough humor to balance the scares.
The meta-concept is clever, Jack Black is entertaining, and the monsters are fun without being traumatizing. It's the cinematic equivalent of a well-executed haunted house at a fall festival - you know what you're getting, and if that's what you want, you'll have a good time.
The main caveat is knowing your kid's scare tolerance. If they've read and enjoyed Goosebumps books, they'll probably love this. If they're still hiding behind the couch during Scooby-Doo, wait a year or two.
It's not particularly deep or enriching beyond celebrating reading, but sometimes you just need a movie that's fun, moves fast, and doesn't make you cringe. This delivers on that promise. Solid B-tier family entertainment.
