Glee is a time capsule from the late 2000s/early 2010s that was genuinely important for its time—particularly for LGBTQ+ representation on mainstream TV—but has aged unevenly. The first two seasons have some magic: underdog kids finding their voice through music, tackling real teen issues, and delivering legitimately great performances.
But let's be real: the show is also a hot mess. The writing is wildly inconsistent, characters behave terribly to each other (and not always in a 'teaching moment' way), and the adult storylines are often inappropriate and distracting. By season 4, it loses the plot entirely.
For parents of high schoolers (14+), this can be a decent watch-together if you're prepared to pause and discuss the messy stuff. It's not going to corrupt anyone, but it's also not the wholesome musical experience you might hope for. The performances are fun, the representation matters, but the show itself is... a lot. And honestly, it feels pretty dated now—the humor, the cultural references, even some of the 'edgy' storylines that seemed bold in 2010 feel tired in 2025.
If your teen is into musical theater, there are better options (Pitch Perfect, The Greatest Showman, actual Broadway recordings). If they're specifically interested in the LGBTQ+ storylines that made Glee notable, watch the first two seasons together and call it a day.
