Gladiator holds up remarkably well for a 2000 epic. It's violent, yes, but purposefully so—this isn't gratuitous gore, it's showing the brutality of ancient Rome and the arena. Russell Crowe is magnetic, the production design is stunning, and the themes of honor and integrity resonate.
This is not a family movie night pick for younger kids. The violence is intense, the opening battle is brutal, and Maximus's family being murdered sets a dark tone. Common Sense Media says 16+, but I'd say mature 14-year-olds could handle it with parents—especially if they're interested in history or can process heavier themes.
For teens and adults, it's a must-watch. The 'Are you not entertained?' moment alone is worth it. It's a film about standing up to tyranny, fighting for justice, and maintaining your integrity when everything is taken from you. That's powerful stuff. Just make sure your kid is ready for the blood and the weight of it all.
