Five Feet Apart is basically The Fault in Our Stars meets every other YA tearjerker you've seen, but with cystic fibrosis and a six-foot distance rule. It's competently made, the leads are charming, and it will absolutely make teens cry—the audience scores prove that.
But let's be real: critics found it derivative and manipulative for good reason. The whole 'breaking medical safety rules for love' thing is... not ideal messaging, especially post-pandemic when we've all learned a lot about how personal choices affect community health. The film wants to have it both ways—celebrating rule-breaking romance while also acknowledging the life-or-death stakes—and it doesn't quite earn that tension.
That said, if your teen is into emotional, romantic dramas and you want something that raises awareness about chronic illness, this does that job. Just be ready for some conversations about when rules exist for good reasons and when 'living fully' becomes 'endangering yourself and others.' It's not a bad movie, but it's not a great one either—it's fine, it's emotional, and it'll be forgotten by next week.
