FernGully occupies that awkward space where good intentions meet execution that hasn't aged well. The environmental message was progressive for 1992, but today it lands with all the subtlety of a falling tree—humans destroy, fairies good, pollution bad, got it.
The animation looks rough by modern standards, and the pacing drags despite the short runtime. That said, Tim Curry's Hexxus is genuinely memorable (maybe too memorable for younger kids), and there's something charming about its earnest tree-hugging energy.
If your kid is in that 6-8 sweet spot and you want to introduce environmental themes, it's serviceable. But realistically, most modern kids will struggle to engage with the dated visuals and heavy-handed messaging. There are better options for both entertainment and eco-education today—this one's more of a nostalgic rewatch for millennial parents than a must-see for Gen Alpha.
