This is one of those books that does exactly what it sets out to do: help young kids understand that families come in all configurations, and that's completely fine. It's not going to win awards for groundbreaking illustration or poetic language, but it fills a real gap.
For kids in non-traditional family structures, seeing themselves represented matters. For kids in traditional nuclear families, learning that other family types are just as valid matters too. The animal portraits keep it light and accessible rather than heavy-handed.
It's a solid library addition and a good choice for families who want to talk about diversity in a low-key, age-appropriate way. Not a must-have for every household, but definitely valuable for many.
