This is one of the better ways to bring escape room excitement home without paying $30 per person per hour. The physical Chrono Decoder device is a nice touch that beats app-based competitors, and the puzzles are genuinely clever rather than arbitrary.
The main limitation is replayability—once you've solved a room, you can't really un-know the answers. But with four scenarios in the base game and plenty of expansion packs available, you're getting solid value. The cooperative nature makes it great for family game nights or friend groups who want something more engaging than another round of Cards Against Humanity.
The 16+ rating seems aimed at puzzle difficulty rather than content concerns. If your 13-year-old crushes logic puzzles and doesn't get frustrated easily, they'll probably be fine. Just know that the timer is real and unforgiving—if you're the type of family that gets stressed by time pressure, maybe stick to untimed puzzle games.
