Here's the thing: D&D is legitimately one of the best things you can do with your kids in terms of building imagination, math skills, reading, and social intelligence. It's collaborative storytelling with dice and structure.
BUT—and this is important—this specific 2008 4th Edition starter set is dated. The rules are clunkier than the current 5th Edition, and you won't find as much online support or additional materials. If you already own this, great, use it. If you're buying new, get the 2024 D&D Starter Set (Heroes of the Borderlands) or the 5th Edition sets instead.
The other reality check: you need an adult to be the Dungeon Master, at least at first. This isn't Candy Land. You're learning a medium-complexity game system and then improvising a story. It's incredibly rewarding, but it takes commitment. If you're willing to put in that time, D&D is genuinely transformative for kids. If you're looking for something to occupy them while you make dinner, this ain't it.
