The Formula That Still Works
By the time we get to The Getaway, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series has long since cemented its place as a modern classic. Some critics argue it’s formulaic, but for a parent trying to get a 9-year-old to put down the iPad and pick up a book, that formula is a godsend. Jeff Kinney understands that kids don't always want to read about heroes; sometimes they want to read about the kid who just wants to stay in the hotel room and play video games.
In this installment, the Heffleys try to ditch the cold for a tropical resort called Isla de Corales. It’s a classic setup for situational comedy. You’ve got the 'authentic' experience vs. the 'tourist' experience, and Greg is caught in the middle of sun poisoning, giant spiders, and a literal monkey in the pool.
"A few days in paradise should do wonders for Greg and his frazzled family. But the Heffleys soon discover that paradise isn't everything it's cracked up to be."
What makes this book (and the series) work is the voice. Greg’s internal monologue is honest in a way that resonates with kids who feel like the world is constantly conspiring against them. It’s a safe space for them to explore cynicism and social anxiety through a lens of humor. If your kid has already devoured the first eleven books, The Getaway delivers exactly what they’re looking for. If they haven't started yet, this is as good a place as any to jump in, as the books are largely episodic and don't require deep lore knowledge to enjoy.
