Here's the thing: Diary of a Wimpy Kid is incredibly popular with kids because it's brutally honest about how mean and status-obsessed middle school can be. Greg is not a role model—he's selfish, manipulative, and willing to throw his best friend under the bus for social points. That's kind of the point, and there are lessons learned by the end, but parents should know they're signing up for 90 minutes of watching a kid make bad choices.
The movie is safe in the traditional sense (no scary content, violence, or mature themes), but it's not exactly wholesome. It's more like a documentary of middle school social warfare with some jokes thrown in. If your kid is navigating or about to navigate these waters, it can be a useful conversation starter about what real friendship looks like versus social climbing.
That said, it's from 2010 and already feels dated. The humor and pacing don't quite land the way they might have back then. Kids who love the books might enjoy seeing the characters come to life, but it's not must-see viewing. It's fine—perfectly serviceable family movie night material if you want to talk about social dynamics afterward, but don't expect it to be enriching on its own.
