If you played Top Gun on a dirt track, you would get Days of Thunder. It reunited Tom Cruise, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and director Tony Scott for a movie that trades fighter jets for NASCAR stock cars. The result is loud, slick, and completely committed to 1990s action aesthetics.
Underneath the roaring engines, the story is pretty lightweight. Tom Cruise plays Cole Trickle, an arrogant hotshot who knows how to drive fast but has zero clue how a race car actually functions. He butts heads with a veteran rival, crashes hard, loses his nerve, and gets pieced back together by a dedicated doctor and a patient crew chief. The racing footage holds up remarkably well because it was shot with actual cars on real tracks, giving the speed a tangible, heavy weight that modern green-screen flicks struggle to match.
That said, it feels dated. The pacing slows down significantly whenever the cars leave the oval, and the romantic subplot feels lifted from a standard Hollywood template. For a family movie night with middle schoolers who love racing, it works as harmless retro fun, but lower your expectations for deep story beats.
