Day One is one of those rare apps that does exactly what it promises without any nonsense. No ads, no social features, no manipulative design—just a really well-made tool for writing down your thoughts.
For kids who are developmentally ready (usually 10+), this is genuinely enriching. Journaling builds emotional intelligence, writing skills, and self-awareness in ways that few other activities can match. The daily prompts are thoughtful, the interface is clean, and the privacy features mean kids can actually be honest without worrying about parents or peers reading over their shoulder.
The free version is legitimately usable—unlimited entries is the main thing you need. Premium adds nice-to-haves like multiple journals and unlimited photos, but it's not a manipulative upsell. This is one of the few apps I'd actively recommend to parents looking for screen time that actually builds something valuable.
