Blake Crouch takes a classic theoretical physics thought experiment and turns it into a heart-pounding survival story. Jason Dessen is a quiet college professor content with his suburban life until he is abducted by a masked man, injected with a psychoactive compound, and brought to a laboratory where everyone knows him as a legendary scientific pioneer who solved multiverse travel. The plot moves fast, dropping readers into terrifying alternate versions of Chicago while Jason tries to figure out how to navigate an infinite corridor of possibilities.
While the physics hook is brilliant, the book does not pull its punches on adult content. Expect raw violence, intense panic, dropping F-bombs, and explicit romantic scenes. High schoolers interested in sci-fi will devour the plot, but this is an adult novel through and through.
If your teenager wants a story that combines hard speculative fiction with breathless action, Dark Matter delivers. Just treat it like an R-rated thriller movie: great story, high adrenaline, explicit content included.
