DALL-E is legitimately cool and genuinely useful—it's not just a gimmick. Kids can explore visual ideas, support school projects, and learn how AI interprets language in ways that feel like magic. The imaginative upside is real.
But this is a tool that requires parenting. The same open-ended creativity that makes it exciting also means a curious 11-year-old can accidentally (or intentionally) generate nightmare fuel, graphic violence, or worse. OpenAI's filters help, but they're not foolproof, and third-party app wrappers add uncertainty.
Treat this like you would a power tool in the garage: supervised use, clear rules, shared screen time in common areas. If you're willing to co-pilot, DALL-E can be a fantastic creative sandbox. If you're looking for a 'set it and forget it' app, this isn't it.
