Look, this show is a bit of a unicorn - it's a musical comedy about mental illness that's both genuinely funny and surprisingly educational. The critical acclaim is deserved. Rachel Bloom (creator/star) made something that starts as a guilty-pleasure stalker comedy and evolves into a thoughtful exploration of borderline personality disorder, therapy, and self-acceptance.
But let's be clear: this is NOT for kids or even young teens. The sexual content is explicit, the mental health crises are intense (including suicide attempts), and the protagonist spends most of the series modeling deeply unhealthy behavior. The show KNOWS this - that's the point - but you need real maturity to get the nuance.
For the right adult viewer, this is fantastic. Smart, creative, willing to take risks, and genuinely enriching about mental health. But if you're looking for family viewing or something for your 14-year-old, absolutely not. This is grown-up television that happens to have show tunes.
