Coup is a sharp, punchy little game that delivers exactly what it promises: fast-paced bluffing and backstabbing in a tidy 15-minute package. It's not going to teach your kid empathy or cooperation—quite the opposite, really—but it will teach them how to think strategically, manage risk, and read a room. The dystopian theme is pure flavor text; what matters is the mental chess of deciding whether to believe your friend's claim that they're the Duke or call their bluff and watch them squirm.
The main caveat is player elimination, which can sting for younger or more sensitive kids who don't love sitting out while others finish. And honestly, it's not great with fewer than 4 players—you need a full table for the bluffing to really pop. But if you've got a group of teens or a family game night with older kids who can handle a little social friction, this is a winner. It's one of those rare games that's simple enough to teach in 5 minutes but deep enough that you'll want to play 'just one more round' all night.
Not for everyone—skip it if your family avoids 'lying games' or if your kids take losses hard—but for the right crowd, it's a blast.
