This is a solid, warm-hearted Disney+ movie that does exactly what it sets out to do: celebrate the weird theater kid. It's got decent reviews (83% on RT), positive messages about being yourself, and genuinely sweet moments.
The LGBTQ representation is a highlight—Nate is clearly coded as gay, but it's handled so naturally that it's just part of who he is, not a "very special episode." For families looking for inclusive content, this is a great pick.
That said, it's not groundbreaking cinema. The story is predictable, the Disney polish makes everything a bit too neat, and if your kid isn't into theater, they'll probably zone out. The 6.4 IMDb and 3/5 Letterboxd ratings suggest it's pleasant but not memorable.
Bottom line: If you've got a kid who belts Hamilton in the shower or dreams of Broadway, this is a lovely, age-appropriate watch. For everyone else, it's a perfectly fine family movie night option that won't offend anyone but won't blow minds either.
