Annihilation is brilliant, but it's not for everyone—and it's definitely not for kids. This is Alex Garland doing what he does best: creating cerebral sci-fi that's as beautiful as it is disturbing.
The film divides audiences. That 88% critic score versus 6.8 IMDb rating tells the story—critics loved its ambition and originality, but general audiences found it slow, confusing, or just too bleak. It's the kind of movie that makes you think and feel uncomfortable in equal measure.
For adults who appreciate thoughtful sci-fi that doesn't spoon-feed answers, this is top-tier stuff. The Shimmer is one of the most creative alien concepts in years, and the film's exploration of self-destruction and identity is genuinely profound. But you need to be prepared for what you're signing up for: graphic violence, body horror that will make your skin crawl, and an ending that refuses to give you closure.
Not date-night material unless your date is into existential dread. But if you want sci-fi that treats you like an adult and isn't afraid to leave you unsettled, this delivers.
