American Panda is genuinely funny and emotionally smart about the impossible position of trying to honor your family while becoming yourself. Gloria Chao nails the specificity of the Taiwanese American experience while telling a universal story about disappointing the people you love most.
That said: this is not your sanitized YA contemporary. The sexual content and language are explicit enough that multiple teen reviewers flagged it, and they're right. If your teen is ready for that (and many 15-16 year olds are), they'll get a story that's both entertaining and genuinely enriching—one that builds empathy for immigrant families while validating the need to forge your own identity.
It's a strong debut that earned its buzz, but preview it before handing it to your 13-year-old who just finished 'Wonder.'
