Look, Altered Carbon has genuinely cool ideas. The premise is fascinating, the world-building is top-tier, and there are real philosophical questions being explored about consciousness, identity, and immortality.
But holy hell, did they bury it under gratuitous content. This is Netflix flexing its 'we can show anything' muscles with graphic violence that would make Tarantino blush and nudity that feels less artistic and more 'because we can.' The show seems to confuse 'mature themes' with 'mature content'—you can explore dark ideas without quite this much torture porn.
For adults who love cyberpunk noir and aren't squeamish, there's entertainment value here. The mystery is solid, the acting is decent (Joel Kinnaman does brooding well), and when it focuses on the sci-fi concepts, it's genuinely thought-provoking.
But this is absolutely not for kids or teens, and even for adults, you need to know what you're signing up for. Season 2 reportedly dials back some of the excess, but Season 1 is... a lot.
