Aliens is legitimately great filmmaking—Cameron took Ridley Scott's slow-burn horror and turned it into a propulsive action movie without losing the dread. The problem for families is that it's genuinely scary and violent in ways that will mess up younger viewers.
Ripley remains one of the best characters in sci-fi, and teens who are ready for R-rated horror will find a movie that respects their intelligence and doesn't pull punches. But 'ready for R-rated horror' is doing a lot of work in that sentence—this isn't Stranger Things scary, it's 'people getting ripped in half by acid-blooded monsters' scary.
The 1986 effects hold up shockingly well, but the pacing and aesthetic are definitely of their era. Modern kids raised on MCU quips might find it slow in the first act. That said, once it gets going, it doesn't stop.
Bottom line: If your 16-year-old wants to understand why people still talk about this movie, it's worth it. If your 12-year-old wants to watch because they like Star Wars, absolutely not.
