The Alexa app is a competent remote control for Amazon's voice ecosystem, but calling it "for kids" is a stretch—it's a household utility that requires serious parental setup to be child-safe.
Without Amazon Kids mode, you're handing your kid a microphone connected to the internet with shopping privileges. With proper configuration, it's fine for timers, music, and the occasional joke. The app itself is boring—just lists, settings, and device management—so kids won't spend time in it anyway.
The bigger issue? The platform peaked years ago. Reddit users who've been around since 2014 report zero meaningful improvements. It works, sure, but it's stagnant. If you already have Echo devices, this app is necessary but unremarkable. If you're deciding whether to enter the Alexa ecosystem for your family, know that you're getting 2014 technology with a 2025 price tag.
