This is solid historical fiction for elementary kids—not flashy, not trendy, but genuinely useful if you're looking for an entry point into conversations about racism, segregation, and social change.
The soccer angle makes it relatable (kids get the frustration of wanting to play and being told no), and the South African setting broadens the civil rights conversation beyond the usual U.S.-centric narratives. The illustrations are lovely, and the story doesn't drag.
That said, it's a 2014 picture book about a heavy topic, so it's not exactly a page-turner for kids who aren't already interested in history or social justice. It's more "I'm glad we read this" than "Can we read it again?" Strong for classroom use or intentional family reading, less likely to become a bedtime favorite.
