Look, this is the animated movie equivalent of gas station snacks—it exists, it's technically consumable, but nobody's going to remember it fondly.
With a 13% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 2.2/5 on Letterboxd, The Nut Job is widely considered a misfire. The premise (animals plan heist to steal nuts) had potential, but the execution is chaotic, the main character is unpleasant, and the animation quality was subpar even for 2014.
Your 6-year-old might sit through it once if they're into talking animals, but they're not going to be quoting lines or asking for repeat viewings. The frenetic pacing and slapstick humor feels more exhausting than entertaining, and there's virtually nothing here for parents sitting alongside.
There are so many better animated options from this era—The Lego Movie, Big Hero 6, How to Train Your Dragon 2 all came out the same year and are infinitely more watchable. Save this one for a desperate moment when you've literally exhausted every other option on the streaming service.
