Holly Black delivers one of the most original vampire novels in the YA space, and if your teen loves horror, they'll probably love this. The Coldtown concept is genuinely fresh, Tana is a great protagonist, and the writing is sophisticated.
But let's be clear: this is dark, violent, and mature. The book opens with a massacre, features repeated graphic violence, includes sexual content, and maintains a bleak, horror-movie atmosphere throughout. Common Sense Media parent reviews consistently flag it as too much for younger teens.
If you've got a 16- or 17-year-old who devours horror and can handle intense content, this is a solid pick—it's smart, well-written, and actually has something to say about addiction and agency. But if your teen is sensitive to violence, still in middle school, or prefers lighter fare, this is absolutely not the book for them. Know your kid.
