This is a genuinely good graphic novel that doesn't shy away from hard stuff. The Holm siblings bring their A-game to a story about middle school that's really about family trauma—specifically, what it's like when your brother goes away for drug problems and comes back different.
It's not a downer book. Sunny's optimism is the throughline, and the artwork captures her emotional complexity beautifully. But one Common Sense Media parent wasn't thrilled about the drug content, and I get it—this isn't what you expect when you pick up a colorful middle-grade graphic novel.
That said, for families dealing with addiction or kids who know someone struggling, this could be incredibly validating. For everyone else, it's still a well-crafted story about resilience. Just preview it first so you know what you're getting into. The 'sunny-side-up' framing earns its keep here—it's not denial, it's survival.
