Sonic 4: Episode I was meant to be a grand homecoming, but it ended up being more of a polite 'hello.' It's perfectly safe and clean, making it a great 'starter' game for a five-year-old who just got their hands on a controller.
However, for anyone over the age of ten, the charm wears off fast. The physics are notoriously stiff—Sonic stops dead if you let go of the D-pad—and the levels feel like they were built by a committee trying to remember what made the 90s games good. It’s not a bad game, it’s just a mediocre one in a series that has much better entries like Sonic Mania or even the original Genesis classics.
