74%View →If your teen is into film history or has a dry sense of humor, this is a gem. It’s the second in the series, but you don't need to see the first one to keep up. It’s essentially a French Austin Powers, but it swaps the toilet humor for a more biting critique of French exceptionalism.
It isn't 'family movie night' material for the elementary set, but for a high schooler who can handle subtitles and understands satire, it's a stylish, hilarious ride through a very specific era of filmmaking.
This is firmly for the 15+ crowd. The humor is sophisticated and relies on understanding that the main character is a parody of 1960s arrogance. Younger kids will just be bored by the subtitles or confused by the irony.
The entire point of the movie is to mock a chauvinistic, arrogant, and culturally insensitive protagonist. It's satire, but the content reflects the very things it's skewering.
The production design is a masterclass in 1960s Technicolor aesthetic. It recreates the look and feel of classic Bond and Hitchcock films with incredible precision.
Standard spy parody fare: stylized action, heavy cigarette use, and plenty of sexual innuendo. There is some brief nudity typical of French comedies.
It's a sharp lesson in media literacy and how to deconstruct outdated tropes, though it requires a certain level of maturity to 'get' the joke.
Most American parodies hit you over the head with the joke. OSS 117: Lost in Rio takes the opposite approach. Director Michel Hazanavicius (who later won an Oscar for The Artist) and star Jean Dujardin play it almost completely straight. Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath is the 'greatest' French spy, but he’s also a walking relic of 1950s colonial attitudes trying to navigate the hippie-infused world of 1967 Rio de Janeiro.
The movie is a visual feast. Every frame looks like it was shot on vintage film stock, using split-screens and rear-projection that feel authentic to the period. It’s not just a movie; it’s a love letter to—and a dismantling of—the Euro-spy genre. For a kid interested in cinematography or directing, there’s a lot to learn here about how visual language creates tone.
The biggest hurdle for parents is the content of the jokes. Hubert is a bigot. He’s patronizing to Brazilians, dismissive of women, and oblivious to the gravity of the Nazi-hunting plot. The movie isn't endorsing this; it’s clowning him. However, that distinction requires a level of maturity. If a viewer doesn't see Hubert as the butt of the joke, the movie feels very different. It’s a great 'media literacy' test: can your kid identify when a movie is making fun of its own hero?
